MAURITIUS: TOURIST ARRIVALS INCREASED BY 5.4%

The number of tourist arrivals in Mauritius increased by 5.4% in September 2017 compared to September 2016, according to the latest monthly report on tourism in Mauritius.

In September, a total of 96 282 tourists traveled to Mauritius versus 91 384 in the same month of the previous year. Combining all tourist arrivals from January 1st to September 30th, 2017, Mauritius welcomed 934 679 visitors versus 880 890 for the same period in 2016 – an increase of 6.1%.

Getting back to September's results, with 14 009 tourists and a market share of 14.5%, the United Kingdom represented the most important market for tourism in Mauritius. France was in 2nd place with 12 186 tourists and a market share of 12.7%. Germany was in 3rd with 11 667 tourists (12.1% market share). The relative importance of these three markets was the same as in September 2016.

In terms of the period spanning from 1st of January to 30th of September 2017, France was the most important market with 180 930 tourists – translating into a 19.4% market share. Réunion came in second place over the span of this period with 106 888 tourist arrivals and a market share of 11.4%. The United Kingdom came in 3rd: 102 467 visitors (11% market share).

It should also be noted that the otherwise promising Chinese market has been in decline. For the month of September 2017 alone, Mauritius welcomed 13.6% fewer Chinese tourists than in September 2016. 6 539 Chinese tourists visited Mauritius in September 2017, versus 7 572 in September 2016.
