The island of Pantelleria lies in the Mediterranean Sea, just off Sicily and not too far away from Tunisia either. It is actually a volcanic island, which erupted 600, 000 years ago. 47 smaller volcanoes also erupted all over the island as you will be able to see by the landscape of the island. It is quite unique.

Some of the evidence can be seen in the form of lava towers. You will still be able to experience hot mineral springs here, which is a sign of some activity. It was also a good base during World War II, but some of the towns were eventually invaded in 1943.

For those who love the water, you will certainly enjoy the blue waters of this island. If you don't want to go swimming, then you can always go exploring on a boat and visit some of the marine caves. People mostly come here from Europe to go snorkeling in the clear waters or simply relax on the beaches. This is the perfect place to learn to dive if you decide to travel here. You will find a qualified diving school. In addition to that, you also have the chance to enroll in the sailing school. Local hotels usually have tennis courts and swimming pools. Of course, there are usually exotic bars for when you decide you want to wind down after an adventurous day.

There are many places in the world where people flock over in order to experience sensational spas. These do cost a small fortune. However, you will find the naturally heated Jacuzzi found in this region won't cost you a dime and is known to be just as good for you, if not better because it is completely natural. You will find natural swimming pools dotted around the island carved out by the lava.

Food and wine is a big attraction here as well. Vines are found all over the island and Italians make good use of them to manufacture some fine wine, which tourists really appreciate. Italian flavors of fried aubergines, olives, capers and flavored ricotta to name a few of the delicacies are what the locals specialize in and it is well worth trying some of these out whilst watching the sun going down. Dishes like Fish couscous and Pesto pantesco are also favorites here. You will also find that there is a connection between Italian cuisine and that from Africa to an extent.

This is a great part of the island to explore if you are someone who appreciates natural beauty. Because the island is right between Africa and Sicily, it is home to many migrating birds and this is something that bird lovers will enjoy. There are 570 different species of fauna and flora on the island.
