Mexico has embarked on the recovery path with numbers regarding international tourism exceeding the 2019 levels. The national statistical agency Inegi has reported that foreign tourists spent 8.67 billion dollars in the country in the first four months of 2022, between January and April.
According to Federal Tourism Minister, Miguel Torruco Márques – the recovery for this period beat 2021 by 123.8% and was 3.7% higher than in 2019. In accordance with the report, international tourists arriving by plane, between January and April, spent an average of $ 1,153 per person, an increase of 8.8% compared to the same period of the last year and 9.8% compared to the first four months of 2019.
Torruco Márques also noted that the average spending of international tourists arriving by air, land and sea was just under $ 745, an increase of 56.1% over last year and an upsurge of 30.8% compared to the numbers reported in 2019.
In total, 11.6 million international tourists entered Mexico in the first four months of 2022, an increase of 43.4% compared to the same period in 2021.
However, this is a lower report than the one estimated in January-April 2019 period, -20.8%, when international tourists were 14.7 million.
Minister Torruco Márques, on the Tianguis Turístico of Acapulco occasion, had estimated a total of 40 million international visitors for the whole of 2022: this would be just 5 million fewer arrivals than the record of 45 million established in 2019.
