More and more German travelers spend their holiday in the neighboring Austria – their number is even higher than the number of domestic guests.
Statistik Austria reported that 13.78 million German overnight stays were recorded in Austrian accommodation facilities from May to July. This is an increase of 6.7% compared to the same period last year.
Germany is thus the most important source market for the Alpine republic.
Meanwhile, Austrian holidaymakers had around 11.35 million overnight stays in their own accommodation facilities. Third place goes to the Netherlands, with around 1.89 million overnight stays in this period.
Austrian hotels, hostels and other facilities also recorded strong growth among tourists from Poland and the Czech Republic. Compared to the same period last year, the number of overnight stays in the first half of the summer season rose by 12.5% and 11%, respectively. Meanwhile, some numbers have fallen, for example Denmark (-7.4%), Italy (-3.9%), France (-2.2%) and Switzerland (-2%).
2018 could be a record year for tourism in Austria, also thanks to the German travelers. From January to July 93.96 million overnight stays were recorded. This is the highest value since the start of statistical records.
