In the third quarter of this year, the number of guests in the country’s accommodation establishments grew 18.1% compared to the same period last year.
The Cape Verde tourism statistics report shows that the United Kingdom was the country responsible for the highest number of tourists. “UK tourists were the ones who stayed in Cape Verde for the longest periods, with an average stay of 9.5 nights. The island of Sal was the most popular destination among tourists, accounting for 52.2% of the overnight stays in accommodation establishments,” the INE indicates.
Based on the same report, throughout the first 9 months of the year, the accommodation establishments registered 512 000 guests and approximately 3.3 million overnight stays, numbers that are translated into increases of 11% and 12.1% respectively, compared to the same period last year.
In a quarterly analysis, the INE explains that “the hotel sector has lodged 163 000 more guests, who accounted for more than 1.1 million overnight stays, translated into increases of 18.1% and 17.1% respectively, compared to the same quarter last year. In absolute terms, the third quarter of 2017 showed that the accommodation establishments lodged 25 060 more tourists, who accounted for an increase of 163 528 overnight stays compared to the same quarter last year.”
The INE reveals that “hotels continue to be the most popular establishments, accounting for 88.6% of the total number of stays. They are followed by residential houses with approximately 3.5%, as well as guest houses and tourist villages, with 2.7% each. Regarding overnight stays, hotels account for 92.1% tourists, villages 2.7%, and residential houses 2%”.
In terms of Cape Verde tourism arrivals, the island of Sal had the highest percentage of accommodations, accounting for 48.8% of the total number of stays, followed by the island of Boa Vista with 31% and Santiago with 10.4%. Regarding overnight stays, the island of Sal accounted for 52.2%, Boavista reached 39.5% and Santiago 3.4% of overnight stays.
