Crime, robberies, murders belong these days to everyday life. If you are lucky, you see the violence only on TV, but then from early morning to the late evening. No wonder travellers prefer to get rid of the violence and choose rather online cheap flights booking for travelling to a safe destination. Tourism-Review.com brings you the TOP 10 of the safest countries in the world announced by OpenTravel. So get inspired and find a save place for your vacation! You will not get hurt! For sure!

Cyprus

Cyprus, the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, is a destination where personal safety is guaranteed. Despite the conflicts with Turkey that divided the island into the South and the North in the 1970s, Cyprus is one of the safest places in Europe. The crime rate is minimal so you even do not have to lock the door at night.

Denmark

Denmark is another north European country that belongs to the safest countries in the world. The homicide rate is as low as 0.88 per 100,000 people. The rates of pick-pocketing are also very low. There is also in fact no danger to get attacked by an animal and you don’t have to be worried about any natural disasters either. It is an ideal land for biking especially if you like it flat and you do not have to be afraid that somebody is going to steal your bike while getting your ice-cream.

Iceland

Iceland is very famous for its hot water springs, geysers, and unspoiled nature. There is in fact only one city of importance called Reykjavik, so if you do not like seeing too many people Iceland is an ideal place to visit. The murders rate is 0.00 and Iceland is with no doubt the safest country in the world! There are only 700 officers in the country and they do not carry guns. The whole country has only 130 prisoners, who are allowed to go home for public holidays. There is also the lowest crime rate in the world!

Ireland

The green island famous for its culture, whiskey and beer is also one of the safest countries in the world. It has one of the lowest homicide rates in Europe – 0.32 per 100,000 people. The numbers also show that Dublin is far less dangerous than the major cities in Japan, Australia or Canada!

Japan

There are many people living in western countries who would die to eat real Japanese sushi while watching Fujisan, the saint mountain of Japan. The country has however much more to offer and what more – you do not have to be worried to travel there even solo. The homicide rate is in Japan 0.44 per 100,000 inhabitants a year and thus Japan belongs with Singapore to the safest countries in Asia. Theft and crime are also very rare in Japan and in comparison with other Asian countries it should be considered as an extra safe destination. There are even lost and found services in Japan. If you leave something behind it is very probable you will find it exactly where you lost it!

Luxembourg

Luxembourg is according to a Mercer survey the safest country in the world. Since it is a tiny state with only half a million people, this applies to the whole nation. People living in Luxembourg are said to be one of the most satisfied in the world and no wonder – the country has a highly developed economy and the highest Gross Domestic Product per capita in the world.

New Zealand

Beautiful landscape, mountains, lakes and seaside make New Zealand a dream of every traveler. No political unrest, stable economy and isolation make New Zealand one of the safest countries in the world. The homicide rate is 2.0, violent crime is almost unknown. No venomous animals such as spiders and snakes live in New Zealand. There are no shark attacks recorded on humans and in fact no danger of a natural disaster since the island is too far for tropical cyclones.

Norway

Norway is a Scandinavian country very famous for its fjords and white nights. What more? Norway is with its homicide rate of 0.71 per 100,000 also one of the safest countries in Europe. No wars, no political unrests, and even no natural disasters. It is an ideal country for a holiday especially if you do not like it hot. Nevertheless you can’t count with a low cost holiday here – among the Scandinavian countries Norway is the most expensive.

Singapore

Singapore is a very popular place to visit. It is a melting pot of Chinese, Malay, Indian, Arabic and Western cultures. It is also one of the unique places in the world where there are in fact no conflicts between the cultures. Singapore is considered to be one of the safest places in the world! The homicide rate is only 0.38 per 100 000 inhabitants. This is extraordinary low if we compare it for example with Venezuela and Honduras that have 58 and 52 intentional homicides per 100,000 people respectively.

Switzerland

Switzerland is famous for its watches, trains, banks and mountains. As such it is a very popular tourism destination not only for hikers and skiers. Switzerland is also one of the safest countries in the world. According to the Mercer research Geneva, Bern and Zurich belong to the safest metropolises in the world. The homicide rate is 2.2 per 100,000 people a year.

  4. What about Oman

I do not think the entire globe is covered in this surveyor study. Sultanate of Oman in that matter is well known as a peaceful destination with friendly and hospitable people and crime rate is almost nil as far as tourism is concerned.

  5. Actually the murder rate in Iceland is quite bit higher than 0! We have a rate of 1.03, which is higher than in both Norway and Denmark.

Also some of our 700-800 policemen carry guns and all of them are trained to use them.

  6. To Petur: Thanks for the information - I was thinking it quite incredible that there would be zero homicide rate.

  9. I'm concerned that this gives the wrong information to tourists. I love my country (New Zealand) but saying that 'violent crime is almost unknown' is simply not true. Such misinformation is dangerous for potential tourists and sadly, we have had a number of tourists murdered here. Statements like the ones in this article put tourists in potential danger by concealing the fact that in New Zealand, like most places in the world, you need to be cautious and mindful of your own security. Do come and visit our beautiful country but take care too.

  10. Shark Attacks

Someone else has aleady rubbished your comment "violent crime is almost unknown" in New Zealand, so I thought I would take 30 seconds to check your other New Zealand falsehood "There are no shark attacks recorded on humans "

New Zealand has a relatively high incidence of shark attacks. Record keepers differentiate between provoked and unprovoked attacks: sharks which have been speared or taken on a line will naturally defend themselves by attacking the person on the other end. Since 1852 there have been 44 recorded unprovoked attacks in New Zealand (compared with 39 in the whole of Europe since 1847).

  11. Iceland is safe

Why isn't Germany on list?! Petur from Iceland, even though you are from Iceland you have your facts wrong, your homicide rate is 0 something per cent per hundred thousand people but not 0 as in zero homicides, I know because I have visited Iceland myself even though Germany is safe, no bias here just a fact, I still felt safer in your country Iceland!!!!

  12. Factor in various things -- include cost of living & wise choices

Shouldn't Austria be in this list? It is very similar to the conditions in Switzerland although I agree that the Suisse get a nod better. But I would choose Austria because of the better cost of living in the rural areas that are not so touristed. And....consider Canada or rural parts of the USA. Sometimes larger countries are better -- so long as you stay away from the more dangerous places. And...remember you can take all the precautions, make all the plans, have all the calculations...but that is just your human thinking. Involve the God of the Bible. Ask Him for His wisdom in your choices for where to live, vocation, and all else. Trust Him. He never fails.

  13. Hong Kong - safest of all

What about Hong Kong. I\'m a Bfrit who has lived here for 30 years, and it beats the lot of \'em for safety. I haven\'t even seen a street fight in all this time.

    MikeC (Hong Kong)
  14. Cyprus is Super

The write-up about Cyprus is accurate. I've lived here and I can tell you that it is a very safe place for everybody. You can leave your door open and nothing will be lost when you get back home.
Cyprus has excellent weather too. Simply a fantastic place

  15. Some Countries do a better job at hiding their domestic problems under the carpet!

As for the safest or most dangerous! Well, crime is every where! Want facts then visit Sites like the CIA fact sheet or other! I laughed when I read the article New Zealand has such low crime rate or Singapore is so safe because of its zero tolerance to crime! Where there's zero tolerance to crime, the people just get smarter at avoiding detection!

I live in a county where most streets have police cameras mounted, literally every where you go there are cameras monitoring the public even on isolated country roads and some mountain trails!

I've seen less violence here then many other countries which I've visited, but does that mean that there is no violence here? People just get sneakier at covering their tracks!

  16. No Natural disasters In NZ?

Aside from the recent earthquakes, we also have the odd lahar (volcanic mud flow), flooding and generally unpredictable weather because the islands are so narrow. It's a great place but this articles very inaccurate!

  17. Germany's Homicide Rate

Germany's homicide rate in 2010 is per hundred thousand people is 0.5% making it not only one of lowest in Europe but worldwide however!!!! I would have thought Germany would have thought it would then be safe by anyone/anybody's standards, so why Germany doesn't qualify to be on list is beyond me!!!! Petur from Iceland, I felt much safer in Iceland than in Denmark and Norway even though their homicide rates per hundred thousand people is similar to my country Germany!!!!

    Klaus (Germany)

  19. Somewhat accurate

I was wondering why this list doesn't have Finland. Helsinki has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. I thought Canada should also be on the list.

It sounds like the factors this writer has considered is merely the homicide rates, and this is why Ireland is supposedly so safe. There are many other things to consider.

I decided this website is a tad more accurate.

  20. Iceland is very safe

Iceland is a very safe country, i haven\'t been there but have seen images of it and have heard people who have been there and are from there and who have lived there, it\'s a beautiful country with very high standards of living and is very clean and very safe and is so safe and the crime there is so low that no one there ever locks their doors, crime there is so low and so rare that every crime that gets reported there makes the news headlines, murders are also extremely rare there and theres only one murder there every five years, i would love to go there and wouldn\'t mind living there to, Iceland today is what Australia use to be like in the 50\'s and 60\'s, Australia use to be a very safe country and use to have a very low crime rate sadly it doesn\'t anymore, today Australia has a high crime rate and is full of drugs gangs thugs louts hoons and bogans, Australia has gotten really bad and is turning into a hell hole, the majority of people here are also not very nice and are rude ignorant loud abnoxious selfish shallow superficial and materialistic, especially the women here, Australian women are the worst when it comes to being selfish shallow superficial and materialistic.

    John (Australia)
  21. NZ's Murder Rate?

The rate is actually 0.9, not 2.0 and even in the past few years has never been that high.

    Fiona (New Zealand)
  22. safety in canada

I am British but have been in western Canada for 6 months Vancouver area and in my opinion and many others that we/they would not venture outside at night in many areas because of gang battles, shooting, knifings etc
